SAT Question of the Day

Cu loses an electron to form Cu+; The quantum numbers of the lost electron are:

(A)n=3 ,l=2, m= -2,-1,0,1,2 , s= -,+ 1/2
(B)n=4 ,l=0, m= 0, s = -,+ 1/2
(C)n=3 ,l=2, m= -2,-1,0,1,2, s= 0,1
(D)n=4 ,l=2, m= 1, s=-,+1/2
(E)n=3 ,l=3, m= -2,-1,0,1,2, s=+,- 1/2

B is the right choice;
[Ar]3d10 4s1

The electron is removed from 4s orbital and therefore its quantum numbers are
n=4 - forth period
l=0 - s orbital
m=0 - only one orbital possible
s= -,+ 1/2
