sp orbital
no, its sp3, alkanes are more stable than Alkynes
I really like this blog...but pls post more problems esspecially organic chemistry..i really like it:d
but i thought if u have more bonds, you have more energy, and thus less stablization because lower energy means more stable ... =/
ohhhhh wait i just realized if its sp its gonna be a trible bond rite ? and triple bonds have the most energy and so sp would be the least stable rite ?
To be more stable must have less energy. If u have triple or double bond the compound is more reactive and unstable, that's why alkynes and alkhenes give addition reactions.Alkanes don't give addtions reactions. So if you have double or triple bond the mains reactions are addition ones, if you have simple bond the maine reaction, are substitions. For example triple bond is formed:-one sigma bond
-two pi bonds
Double bond:-one sigma
-one pi bond
--->pi bond its formed by the pure orbitals "p", it has a big energy, so it isnt so stable.
Ok, guys here is the answer.
The MOST stable orbital is SP.
All of you know than, the "s"orbitals have a lower energy than the "p" orbitals and therefore are more stable. The lowest energy an orbital has the more stable it is.
the so, sp2 and sp3 orbitals have an energy grater than that of the "s"orbitals, but less than that of "p"orbitals.
To find which one is more stable you have to calculate the percent of s orbital in each of them
therefore sp is 50%-s and 50% p.
sp2 is 33.33% s and 66.66% p.
sp3 is 25% s and 75% p.
this means that sp are closer to the s orbitals than sp2 and than sp3l So they have lower energy and
are more stable.
DO NOT BE CONFUSED by the alkane-alkene-alkyne analogy.
O and N and other elements can also be hybridized and they are NOT hydrocarbons.
Thanks for the good words; I am in Europe at the moment and I can not answer you as quickly as i wish because of the time difference.(for those who are from US)
haha yes i was initially rite =)
sry wrote something im not sure is right, sp orbitals are two or more double bonds?
i thought they had at least one triple bond ...
